This week was focused on learning about design. For this unit we had to watch videos about what design is and we listened to a talk by Tim Owens called “We Are All Artists.” I thought that both of these were super interesting, and they both changed the way I think about design. Before watching/listening to these I never thought about how much design is all around us in our everyday lives. I also thought that Tim Owens’ talk was super interesting and really made me think about how I think about creativity. One of his main points is that creativity isn’t something that you’re born with, but it’s a skill that you can develop. He also said that people who are the most creative tend to be in creative environments and that DS106 is one of those creative environments.
This week I also completed a design safari to look for elements of design out in the real world. I also completed four assignments to work on my design skills which can be found here: newspaper assignment, destination poster assignment, missing person assignment, and greetings from DS106 assignment. I also did three daily creates.
This unit really changed the way I thought about design, and I also learned about different elements of design such as minimalism, rhythm, and proportion. I also think that I learned more about how to tell a story visually as I started including more than just links in my stories this week. I think my biggest challenge with this unit was that when looking over the assignment, it seemed overwhelming so I was scared to start working. However, once I started working it wasn’t as hard or as scary as I thought it would be. I think the biggest thing that I learned and the thing that changed my worldview the most was the idea that creativity isn’t something inherited and that it’s something you can work at.
